実はこの本2019年の最後の最後に読み終わりました。

どうしてもブログで紹介したかったのですがなかなか

この本自体は1996年に発売された本ですが今更読んでみました。

この本の主題となるのは

central theme of this book is that culture and culture identities, which at the broadest level are civilization identities, are shaping the patterns of cohesion, disintegration, and conflict in the post-Cold War world.

冷戦後の世界の紛争などについて文明、文化という視点から解説していく

タイトルにもある"文明の衝突"という壮大なテーマですが、宗教、文化、文明、民族などなど今の世界を構成している各要素についての解説とその歴史背景などとてもわかりやすく書かれています。

何よりも自分の無知さ具合を知ることができました。イランーイラク戦争やロシアのクリミア併合などそのワードは知っているけどなぜここに至ったのかなど正直全然知ることがなかったことがこの本で触りなりにも理解できるようになりました。

単純化している分説明不足なところもある気もしますがなにせテーマが壮大なので…

以下何個か具体例です。

Religion is the motor of development.

以前韓国に行った際にやたらとキリスト教の教会があり不思議だったんです。イメージとしては儒教のイメージが強くなぜキリスト教？というのがあったのですが著者によると

"Religion is the motor of development"

 つまり意訳すると、急激な開発による変化が従来の仏教ではなくカトリックにフィットしているという。

例として韓国だけではなくラテンアメリカでも同様な現象があったようです。

また、これは現在にもつながっていて

Recent migrants to the cities generally need emotional, social, and material support and guidance, which religious groups provide more than any other sources.

宗教が移住者にとっていろいろな意味でサポートがあるという点。

この点も移住者に限らず日本で言えばオウム、海外で言えばISISなど受け皿となる宗教があるという意味ではにているのかなと。

 

Connection between Islam and militarism

ISISつながりでイスラムと戦争についてもかなりのページが費やされてましたのでその部分を。

Muslims make ups about one-fifth of the world's population but in the 1990s they have been far more involved in intergroup violence than the people of any other civilzation.

1990年代1/5の人口はイスラム教だったようですが、イスラム教が絡む紛争などは他の文化圏よりも多かったそうです。そしてその武力は他の宗教を主とする国の武力よりも多かったとのこと

In the 1980s Muslim countries had military force ration (that is, the number of military personnel per 1000 population) and military effort indices (force ratio adjusted for a country's wealth) significantly higher than these for other countries. Christian countries, in contrast, had force ratios and military effort indices significantly lower than those for other countries.

具体的にどのくらい違いがあるかというと

While Muslim states resorted to violence in 53.5 percent of their crises, violence was used by the United Kingdom is only 11.5 percent, by the United States in 17.9 percent, and by the Soviet Union in 28.5 percent of the crises in which they were involved. Among the major powers only China's violence propensity exceeded that of the Muslim state: it employed violence in 76.9 percent of its crisis.

 中国を除いて内紛において武力を使って鎮圧した率が高かったようです。 

 

 

How might war between the United States and China develop?

最後に紹介するのは経済において衝突が続いている米国と中国の関係です。

Given this American interest, how might war between the United States and China develop? Assume the year is 2010. American troops are out of Korea, which has been reunified, and the United States has a greatly reduced military presence in Japan. Taiwan and mainland China have reached an accommodation in which Taiwan continues to have most of its de facto independence but explicitly acknowledge Beijing's suzerainty and with China's sponsorship has been admitted to the United Nations on the model of Ukraine.

2010年には米軍が韓国から撤退とありますがそれに近い状況まで至りましたが今の所撤退までは行っていません。ただ、中国の影響が強くなりつつあるのは間違いないかなと

気になるのはここでの日本の立ち位置の予測

 

the U.N. secretary general and the Japanese prime minister to negotiate a cease-fire fail, and the fighting spreads elsewhere in East Asia. Japan prohibits the use of U.S. bases in Japan for action against China, the United States ignores that prohibition, and Japan announces its neutrality and quarantines the bases.

 

つまり日本は休戦交渉に失敗し他の東アジア地域で紛争が相次ぐ。日本は米軍に国内基地の使用を拒否すると…

中国と米国の板挟みとなるというのはどっちつかずの態度を取りそうな日本の政治家からは容易に予想がつきますが結局どうなるのでしょうか？

少なくとも現政権下でそうなった場合はこうならない気もします…

 

本書のまとめとして最後はこのような文で締めくくられています。

In the emerging era, clashes of civilizations are the greatest threat to world peace, and an international order based on civilizations is the surest safeguard against world war.

 文明に基づく規律が世界大戦を防ぎ、文明衝突が世界平和の危機である

さて、この本はキンドルで読んだんですがキンドル歴8年になるのに今更ハイライトやノートが出力できるということを知ったのでより多く引用を入れることができました。

そしてそれが原因で超長い文になり削ぎ落としてブログにしたので3ヶ月も時間がかかってしまいました…

ただ、キンドルのハイライト/ノート出力機能はとても使いやすいので極力キンドルを使おうかなと思いました…

と言いながら今年入ってから読んだ本は3冊中2冊が紙の本、そして今読んでいるのも紙の本…

次読む予定の2冊も紙の本と…
